Local SEO

How long does local SEO take to actually work?

Short answer: 90 days to see your Google Maps listing climb. 4 to 6 months to start ranking in regular Google searches. Anyone promising “page 1 in 30 days” is lying or selling you fake traffic.

The honest timeline (month by month)

Local SEO is not magic. It is steady work that compounds. Here is what actually happens, broken down by month, when you start a real local SEO program for a small business.

Month 1: Foundation

We audit your site, rebuild your Google Business Profile, fix your name/address/phone everywhere on the internet, and add the hidden labels Google reads (called schema). This is the heaviest month. Most agencies charge a setup fee for it. We do not.

What you will see: almost nothing on the outside. The work happens behind the scenes.

Month 2: Citations and content start

We list your business on the directories that matter (Yelp, BBB, industry-specific sites). We start writing blog posts about the things your customers actually search for. We start sending review requests to your past customers.

What you will see: reviews start to trickle in. Your Google profile gets more views.

Month 3: Maps movement

This is when your Google Maps ranking usually starts to move. You will see your business climb from page 2 or 3 of the map results into the top 5, sometimes the top 3 for less competitive searches.

What you will see: phone starts ringing more. The first new customers say “I found you on Google.”

Months 4 to 6: Organic rankings

Now the work in months 1 to 3 starts showing in regular Google searches (not just the map). Blog posts begin to rank. Service pages climb. Long-tail searches like “emergency plumber in Green Bay open Sunday” start bringing in leads.

What you will see: steady increase in calls from people who searched for your service.

Months 6 to 12: Compounding

Every blog post we wrote in month 2 is still on your site, still ranking, still bringing leads. New posts pile on top. Reviews keep coming in. Citations keep getting built. The work compounds. This is the part SEO agencies do not show you because it takes patience.

Why is it not faster?

Three reasons. None of them have anything to do with us being lazy or you being unlucky.

1. Google has to trust you first

Google sees thousands of new business listings every day. Most of them are spam. Google waits to make sure you are real before it ranks you. That wait is usually 60 to 90 days.

2. Your competitors are not standing still

Every other plumber in your town is also fighting for the top 3 spots. Some have been at it for years. We have to do better work more consistently to pass them, which takes time.

3. Content takes time to rank

A blog post needs about 90 days before Google really decides where to rank it. Until then, it is floating in “not sure yet” territory. After 90 days, if the post is good, it climbs.

Red flags that an SEO company is lying to you

  • “Page 1 in 30 days, guaranteed.” Either fake traffic or paid ads dressed up as SEO. Real rankings take months.
  • “We have a special relationship with Google.” No one does. Google sells ads. They do not sell rankings.
  • “100 backlinks a month for $99.” Spam links. Google will penalize you for them.
  • Reports that show traffic but not phone calls. Traffic that does not turn into customers is worthless.
  • 6 or 12-month contracts with cancellation fees. Real SEO companies do not need to trap you. We do not have contracts. See our SEO plans.

What you can do to speed it up

You cannot make Google move faster. But you can make sure the work you ARE doing actually counts.

  • Ask every happy customer for a review. More reviews means faster trust signals to Google. (Our Google Business Profile service does this for you.)
  • Answer the phone every time. A page-1 ranking is useless if calls go to voicemail at 3pm.
  • Keep your hours accurate on Google. Closed on Tuesdays? Make sure Google knows. Wrong hours kill trust fast.
  • Upload new photos every month. Google rewards active profiles. One photo a month is enough.
  • If your website is slow, fix it. Slow sites kill SEO no matter how much work we do. If you are on a 10-year-old WordPress or Wix, consider a flat-fee rebuild.

How to tell if your SEO is actually working

Ignore vanity numbers. Watch these instead:

  • Phone calls from Google. Your Google Business Profile shows you exactly how many people called you straight from search. That number should climb every month.
  • Direction requests. People asking Google Maps for directions to your shop. Climbing = working.
  • New customers saying “I found you on Google.” Ask. Track. It is the most honest signal you have.
  • Where you rank in the map for your top search. Move from page 2 to page 1, then page 1 to top 3. Steady is the goal.

What to ignore: total website traffic, impressions, “keywords tracked.” Those are numbers agencies use to look busy. They do not mean you are winning.

The bottom line

If you start local SEO in May, expect your Maps ranking to move by August and your organic rankings to start showing real lift by September. By next May you should be the top result in your town for your service.

That is the honest timeline. Anyone telling you faster is either wrong or scamming you.
